Together we will journey all over the world through our study of literature. We will journey throughout America, England, and Ireland through our short stories and study of nonfiction.
Then we will travel through time to William Shakespeare's England. We will discover many interesting details about theater of the time as well as the Tudor family of monarchs. Then we will sample Renaissance life in Italy through Romeo and Juliet, one of Shakespeare's greatest tragedies.
Toward the middle of the semester, we will travel to Ancient Greece to study the epic hero as seen in Homer's The Odyssey. We will also study Greek mythology and hope no angry god or goddess turns us into a classroom of bugs before we complete our research!
Near the end of the semester, we will travel to the Victorian England of Charles Dickens and follow the life of an orphan named Pip in the novel Great Expectations.
Within the last ten days of the semester, all freshmen enrolled in English I must take the Gateway End of Course Exam which will count as twenty percent of their semester grade. We will be preparing for this test throughout the semester in various ways. For more information about the English I End of Course Exam, visit the Tennessee Department of Education web page regarding this matter (End of Course Assessment). |
