What's New
Welcome to the 2010-2011 School Year!!!

We hope that this will be the best year ever for Coordinated School Health.  We have several new projects that we are involved in.

One project is Exercise in the Classroom.  Last year there was an article in the Knoxville paper about an Oak Ridge classroom teacher that decided to add exercise to her daily schedule.  She received a state grant which allowed her to start the in-class exercise regimen.  She has two exercise bikes, an eliptical exerciser and a Wii Fit game.  When the students are not hitting the books, they are using the equipment or doing laps in the school hallways.

They are also counting calories, reading food labels and choosing healthier snacks.  The teacher, Deana Sanabria, says the results are obvious.  Several of the students have lost weight and all of them pay more attention to their lessons.  Another bonus is that for the first time in her 16 years as a teacher, she has no disciplinary problems.  "Teachers say they don't have the time to let children exercise, I say you have to make time," says Deana.  She also meshes fitness and nutrition with studies.  Students figure out how many calories they have to burn to work off a snack.  Sometimes it just takes a little effort, but there are a lot of ways to incorporate exercise, nutrition and health into academics.

Coordinated School Health has chosen three teachers to experiment with this concept this year.                               at Grassy Fork, Mary Ball at Edgemont, and                                    at Centerview have agreed to work with us and see how this can work.  We purchased each classroom an exercise bike and a Wii to use throughout the year.  The teachers will keep records and we will see where we are next May.
